El alcoholismo se define, según la OMS, "como cualquier deterioro en el funcionamiento físico, mental o social de una persona, cuya naturaleza permita inferir razonablemente que el alcohol es una parte del nexo causal que provoca dicho trastorno".

Para el diagnóstico de este problema, el especialista realizará una historia clínica completa y orientada a detectar el problema, cuestionarios de despistaje y pruebas analíticas (determinación de VCM, gamma-GT, transaminasas y estudio de lípidos).

El tratamiento del alcoholismo pasa por diversas fases: reconocimiento del problema, fase de desintoxicación, fase de deshabituación y la fase más larga de rehabilitación y resinserción social
